Steven Kirby’s safety talk today was exceptionally powerful and deeply personal. Steven shared how a serious workplace accident became the catalyst for a period of addiction, depression, and personal struggle. He spoke openly about how he convinced himself he was coping and repeatedly told those around him that he was fine, despite the clear impact on his wellbeing and increasingly erratic behaviour. It was his ex partner who recognised that things were not right and pushed him to seek the help he needed.
What made Steven’s story so impactful was his honesty about the turning point that followed. By accepting support, learning to open up, and challenging the negative thoughts and behaviours that had taken hold after the accident, he was able to significantly improve his mental wellbeing and regain control of his life. Today, he uses those experiences to help others facing similar challenges. His message reinforced the importance of making the right choices, trusting our instincts when something doesn't feel right, and having the courage to intervene when we see someone struggling.
Recommendation: I would strongly recommend this talk to all employees and leaders. Steven’s authentic and relatable story goes far beyond traditional safety messaging, highlighting the often-overlooked connection between workplace incidents, mental health, and personal wellbeing. The session provides a powerful reminder that looking out for one another, speaking up, and encouraging people to seek support can have a life-changing impact.
